Protein – the Actual Elixir of Life

January 27th, 2012

Our very existence on Earth depends on the major nutrients required by our body to survive and the king of this class is the biologist’s favorite macromolecule, namely the protein. Proteins are molecules that are composed of units called amino acids, which when joined together constitute peptides. Proteins are vital for many of the body’s functions, like serving as precursors for other macromolecules, adding to the body’s molecular structure and in provision of energy for the general metabolism of the body, among others. Many plant and animal sources provide optimal amounts of proteins to the body. However, the actual protein requirement depends on many factors like, the essential amino acids needed by the body, the energy uptake rate of the body and others. Nevertheless, one has to know that the body receives its share of energy from the protein source, as a result of degradation of the same by enzymes present in the body, into its constitutive amino acids.
